Artist in Action Fellowship

Action Lab Welcomes Dennis Leroy Kangalee as Artist in Action Fellow

The Action Lab is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dennis Leroy Kangalee as an Artist in Action Fellow, effective October 15th.

The beginning of a bold and beautiful collaboration, the Action Lab is known for its curation and development of artist-organizer relationships and new works that foster an understanding of the struggles both in the world and in the trenches of activism. Heavily inspired by radical geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore, the Action and the Kangalee Arts Ensemble’s ideas will stimulate a provocative and necessary growth amongst both the Left and the performing arts.

Known for his groundbreaking work in theater and film, Kangalee brings a wealth of experience and a passion for social justice to the Action Lab. His most recent projects, including the critically acclaimed "Krapp's Last Tape" and "The Life & Death of Art," have captivated audiences with their powerful performances and exploration of complex themes.

As an Artist in Action Fellow, Kangalee will be developing a new original work entitled "My Dying City (or The Social Justice Suicide Hour): A Rogue Revue For Broken Hearted Radicals." This provocative piece will delve into the intersection of revolution, genocide, and personal struggles, offering a unique perspective on the challenges facing society today.

The Action Lab, a leading organization dedicated to fostering artist-organizer relationships, is excited to support Kangalee's vision. Together, they will work to create art that inspires, challenges, and empowers audiences to take action.

Kangalee Arts Ensemble

Formed in 2022, The Kangalee Arts Ensemble Inc is a BIPOC-led radical theater company that champions the liberation of the actor as performing artist and a socially responsible citizen in society; and is beholden to new works for the theater that raise awareness, address socio-political problems of our time and engages in provocative interpretations of the classics. Heavily influenced and inspired by the legacy of the sixties counter-culture exemplified by the Black Arts Movement and the Living Theater and the avant-garde circles that gave birth to both the Theater of the Absurd and the American result of Stanislavsky’s system, The Group Theater. Emphasizing personal and political expression and form over the trappings of entertainment, hired help craftmanship, or the notion of being a “servant to the text.”
